The main attraction of 1770, a small town near Agnes Water, where Captain Cook first set foot in Australia in 1770, are the surfing lessons for $16 each. These are cracking value when compared to the rest of the beach towns on the Gold Coast; we were always going to stop here to try our hand at the national hobby.
The other reason we loved staying here was the Cool Bananas hostel. Along with Gilligan's in Cairns this has been the best hostel, for the opposite reasons - mainly due this time to the relaxed atmosphere and the way it felt like home. After a day surfing at the beach, it was great to come 'home' to a ready cooked meal by the resident hostel chef for $5 and then to watch a film while sitting in the big, comfy sofas in the living room.
The beach here is fantastic and is obviously ideal for surfers. We turned up for the lesson, at the surf shop, at the relatively early time of 10.15am and then spent the next three hours learning the surf basics; the baking sunshine also played a part in adding to the enjoyment, no doubt.
After getting a quick beginners' tutorial on the beach, it was soon out into the surf to catch some waves. As first thought, surfing proved to be extremely difficult but it was worth it for the odd occasion that we managed to get up onto the board. Unfortunately the videos of me surfing betray my lack of talent, whereas the photos actually didn't look too shabby.
We'll have to carry on with the surfing as we head for Bondi Beach and the rest, although next time I'll know the value of a surfer's 'rash' and board shorts: I've still got the grazes on my knees and chest from where we hired a board the follwing day without the proper attire.
