Perhaps Georgetown didn't turn out to be 'Malaysia's most fascinating city' as the Rough Guide had suggested, but it was a lovely little place all the same. We were pleased to find the weather overcast when we arrived which makes sightseeing much easier. We began by sampling the local cuisine which was greatly received, we'd enjoyed the Thai food but it was good to have a proper curry.
The rest of the day was spent visiting all the colonial monuments our guidebook instructed us to, before ducking inside our hostel to avoid the afternoon rainstorm. When the weather had cleared up, we wandered through Chinatown and Little India and then stumbled upon, as we tend to do, yet another night market serving fantastic cheap food. Whilst Kev explored the food stalls, I was left to watch a group of Malaysians line dancing to the country & western music that was blaring out.
The baking sun didn't make our second day quite so easy but we still managed to walk the 197 steps to the biggest temple in Malaysia which gave great views of the city. We then caught the bus back just in time to avoid the scheduled rainstorm which is unlike anything we've seen before.
We arrived at the station in plenty of time for our 21:45 night train to Kuala Lumpur, however, the workmen at the station seemed to view this only as the time to start building the train, so we ended up seeing rather more of Butterworth station than we'd planned.
