We arrived on the beautiful island of Koh Phi Phi on Friday morning and immediately did what our Rough Guide told us to do and headed for Long Beach which was less crowded and less expensive, it seemed that everyone else had done the same, however. Luckily, we were able to get a simple beach hut to live in for the next few days and then spent the afternoon on the crowded beach. I know we said Koh Tao had the most beautiful sea we'd ever seen but Phi Phi has now taken pole position.
Our second day was spent enjoying the baking sunshine, a little too much sunshine it turned out, as we both got fairly burned, so much so that I've had trouble sitting down until now! This didn't stop us from making the long walk along the shoreline in the evening to the main village, where we had dinner whilst watching 'The Beach', for which Phi Phi was the setting. As it was now Saturday, we obviously spent the evening watching numerous football matches, (and rugby matches for Kev) in the Irish Pub amongst many fellow United & Liverpool fans. Sitting down for several hours however, had not helped my sunburned legs and I did not appreciate scrambling over rocks to get back to our beach that night.
Having learned from the previous day's mistake, we gave the beach a miss and instead headed for 'The Beach.' We took a guided tour out to Maya Bay, the setting for the film, and stopped off to do some swimming in the lagoon on the way. The beach is undoubtedly beautiful, but it is just a beach and nothing else and can get a bit boring when you're making an effort to stay out of the sun.
We spent our last night, as we had the previous two, on the main beach and watched Juno in one of the bars, which we'd been looking forward to seeing and had considered buying from one of the pirate dealers. As seems to happen with a lot of Thai DVDs, the ending was scratched so we never got to see what actually happened. It seems like we'll have to watch the end of quite a few films when we get home.
We were up early this morning to get a boat, then a bus so we can then get a train to Malaysia tonight. We feel we've managed to see a lot of Thailand in the past 3 weeks and would definitely recommend it, even Bangkok, maybe only for a night though. And yes, as I'm sure everyone can tell from our blogs, the food is fantastic.
