Hi everyone,
Well after spending 3 weeks in Melbourne, looking for work (sort of!) we decided that we couldnt be arsed working again for a little while. We decided that we (me and Pete) had worked hard enough over Christmas and new year we deserved the break!!! It wasnt a planned thing it just sort of happened. Me, Pete, Whitney and Chelsea (our housemates) were just kicking around the house one morning. Chelsea was on the computer trying to find flights to Sydney and me, pete and Whitney were in the kitchen. Me and Pete were talking about what a shame it was gonna be that the girls were leaving and that we were gonna get stuck in the house with the other 2 miserable Dutch girls. So we decided that, sod getting a job we will just leave aswell (but in the other direction). Chelsea came in and asked for some help with booking her flights and when we were just about to book them it was mentioned that why dont we all just leave together and go up to Adelaide, do Ayres rock and then go our seperate ways once we get to Darwin. We all agreed that we could put up with eachother for that long, made a few phone calls and adjustments to other travel plans and it was done, we were all gonna travel up the middle of Australia together! Simple as that! Thats one of the things i love about traveling, you can just wake up one day, have a simple conversation and the next thing you know all your previous plans are out the window and you set on your way to do something else! Its great!
We decided that we wanted to drive the great ocean road rather than do a tour so me and Pete phoned up a few hire car companys but didnt really have much luck, they were all too expensive. So we went on the internet had a look for relocations on campavans and came across one that would take us from Melbourne to Adelaide for $1 a day! We thought there must be some sort of catch so we phoned them. But no it was correct, we could have a delux 6 bed camper for $1 a day! Brilliant!!! So we booked it, packed it and *!%*!* off!!!
We had 3 days (and about 1200km) to get the van there so set off quite early in the morning. It took us about 4 hours to get to the twelve apposles on the great ocean road and when we did arrive it was the same old story..... Japs, hundreds of them everywhere! They love a good tourist attraction! So we did our tourist bit (now including a photo with the Japs!), got back in the 'bus' and were off again! The freedom of having your own transport is great, you dont have to wait for loads of other people fannying around and you can see some other bits you might not get the chance to on a tour! It got to about dinner time and we were all starving, so we found a little town, parked up in Coles supermarket car park, got some fish and chips and ate them in the back of the van! It was really funny cause all these people that were going shopping kept looking at us while we were having our dinner, fair enough though we were in the middle of a carpark!!! That night we found a camp site, parked the van and went for a wander down the beach, the sun set was quality! Then we had a few games of table tennis and went to bed!
The next day we got up and didnt exactly rush around to get going, we just did what we had to do and set off in our own time. I wanted to go to a place called keith (Shellie, Kate, Jane, Al and Paul will understand why!) which was pretty much on the way to Adelaide. So we set off up the coast and saw on the map a place called 'Southend', I had to go there! We got there and the place was tiny but really nice, not like Southend-on-sea in Essex at all!!! It did have a pier though! We stopped off in another few places before we finally got to the legend that is 'Keith'! Its another tiny town (population 1089!) in the middle of nowhere so we just found a camp site and had another chilled out night in the van.
The following day we only really had time to drive to Adelaide as the van had to be back by 3pm. So we took a leisurely drive there, dropped the van off and went back to the hostel. That night Me and Pete went out and met up with someone i met in Sydney and had a few beers. On the way home we went to 1 last pub, as you do! It was a right 'hillbilly' pub! I got challenged to an arm wrestle by some 18yr old (and lost!) and Pete, when i turned around, was on the 'bucking bronko'!!! It was one of those strange endings to a night when you wonder the next day how you ended up in that situation! Funny though!!!
We spent the next couple of days looking around Adelaide and booking our next trip.... On the 'Ghan' train up to Alice springs..........
