Madeira Portugal. Saturday October 20th. Due to hurricane Rapheal, our Captain decided that it would be best to alter our course away from the storm, so instead of heading for the Azores Islands as planned, we ended up in Madeira , which is referred to as the "Purple Islands" The colorful name could have referred to the shadows from the towering volcanic peaks, or the famous Madeiras wines. We boarded our bus at 9:15 AM and proceeded on a tour of the City of "Funchal", which took us up some interesting mountain roads with tight curves and very small guard rails, if any at all. It was a fantastic photo opportunity and then on to the side of the island where all the farming is done. Orange trees, banana trees, apricots, you name it they grow it. A few stops for photos and souvenirs and we are on our way back to the ship. The weather is beautiful, so everyone has forgotten about the hurricane for now. Maybe later we will remember "Rapheal", or maybe now we will learn about "Hurricane Sandy" which will usher us all the way to Ft. Lauderdale.
