This morning we left Saigon by sleeper bus en route to the seaside town of Mui Ne. Instead of having conventional seats, a sleeper bus has 2 bunk bed style levels of 3 fully reclining seats in each row. As comfortable as they are, they were designed for your average Asian, not for a 6'4" Canadian with size 12 feet.
According to Google maps, the 216 km trip should take 3 hours 38 minutes. In reality, due to the congestion on the1A highway, my feet will be liberated in 6 or 7 hours.
We arrived in Mui Ne at 3:15, seven and a half hours after leaving Saigon. Despite the long duration of the ride, it went smoothly.
We checked into our hotel and went for a long walk along the main strip to check out the town.
There is an incredible array of fresh seafood restaurants along the shoreline, but we passed them all by and went to a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant for a hot pot.
It puzzles me why so much of Vietnamese cuisine revolves around boiling broths. It seems counterintuitive to be consuming boiling liquids when the ambient temperature is in the 30's. But it works!
Tomorrow will be our first beach day with a forecast of 32 degrees by noon.
