We managed to get in a pretty good night's sleep, despite the 13 hour time difference. I guess the minimal amount of sleep we got on the trip over here has beaten the usual jet lag.
Our hotel is in a pretty happening and vibrant area of the city, within walking distance of most of the attractions and lots of good food.
While we ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant, we were fascinated by a woman street vendor that meticulously and patiently placed one lychee at a time into a bundle for sale. She repeated this over and over again the entire time we were in the restaurant.
After breakfast we walked over to the Ben Thanh public market which, because of its location, caters more to the tourist trade than to the local population. As such, prices were a little higher than we expected, but still a bargain by Canadian standards. There were fruit stands, meat and fish stands, clothing, knock off watches and backpacks. We decided to buy jackfruit, durian and cherimoya for our lunch, but when we sat down to eat it, we discovered what we thought was jackfruit was something else altogether. It was quite delicious, but it had a thorny pit in the middle. Still haven't figured out what it was and our inability to speak Vietnamese isn't helping in our attempts to identify it.
After lunch we went for hour long massages at a cost of $25.00.......for the two of us! Actually, this was a lot more than we expected to pay, but that's a story for another time.
For dinner we went for a fantastic bowl of Pho at Pho Quynh and then had a funky sticky rice dessert at the night market before heading back to the hotel for the night.
Check out the photo section for some of the day's pictures.
