World Trip 2005-06
I just spent the last half hour writing the diary for the Penang and somehow managed to delete the whole thing! so this is a rushed version of the Penang vibe.
We arrived in Penang late afternoon, excited about the prospect of experiencing Malaysia and what their cities had to offer. Penang turned out to be a great choice, we loved how diverse the city was with its blend of colonial buildings, cosmapolitan nightlife and chinese culture. After booking in a \' 2 pound a night room\' we strolled around Georgetown checking out the awesome nightlife on offer. We didnt realise however that the drinks were so expensive, so we layed off the booze and stuck to chilling/dancing. As we walked around town we noticed an awesome posh looking hotel that boasted a hugh window at the front of the building. We thought it would be a great idea to get a lift to the top of the hotel and check the view. However it turned out that you needed to have a room key to operate the lifts. After a while we managed to wangle our way to the top of the hotel only to find that we couldnt access the window view! it was cool though becuase we loved the luxery vibe and the awesome christmas decorations around the hotel.
The next day after another walk around the streets of Penang we did some more posh hotel hopping. This time we went to see the historic and grand \'Eastern and Oriental hotel\'. Again we enjoyed the luxery feel of the place but the journey to find the hotel proved more entertaining. We decided to use the traditional and famous mode of transport in Penang: the awesome \'Trishaw\', which is basically a bike with two seats propt in front. We were a bit worried as the driver seemed very old and unwell, as we looked around however all the trishaw drivers were the same age, so we let him drive our healthy 21 year old bodies through the streets of Penang to find the hotel. Although it felt wrong we just reminded outselves that he probly loves it and has been biking around town for the last 80 years.
Later that night we packed our bags and headed to the bus station, in preparation for an overnight trip to Kuala Lumper. We were told as we arrived at the station that the bus would be leaving in an hour. At the station we asked an employee if there is anyway nearby that we could visit for an hour before the bus left. She smiled and replied \'no, just the wrestling on tv\'. As it wasnt the real wrestling we know and love we headed off to see if there was in fact anything to do. It turned out that just two mins away there was the best dam carnival ever! boasting awesome activities such as mini moterbike racing and quirky stalls with drink sampling etc. We had an awesome time and even managed to buy some personalised dog tags to brand our world traveling up a bit. At 12.15 we were back at the station boarding a bus to KL that we thought would get us there early morning........
