Arrived in Melbourne on the 20th, and headed to the Queen Victoria Night Market. After being told the weather would be crap, we were pleasantly surprised by the 33degree heat!! Felt like we were back in Asia again with all the stalls at the market, enjoyed a fajita and Robyn fell in love with a chocolate fountain stall, licking her plate clean!! The night continued with Steph deciding to paint pictures on a kids stall and teaching a German kid to misbehave! We were also tempted in by a wine stall, where we made a purchase, only because it was all natural ingredients!! Stayed at the market drinking until we were asked to leave...oops! On returning to our hostel, we had a nasty surprise awaiting! As we opened the door to our dorm, the smell of rotting flesh hit us - our one and only roomy was an old bed-ridden Korean man in his pants. After a couple of minutes in shock, we left the room to debate the situation!! The decision was made to request a change in room, so Robyn did the deed and all was sorted!! When retrieving our backpacks from the dorm, we noticed the worst was yet to come! - the hidious man had a beggar sign next to his bed stating ' im only 73, i suffered a wound to my leg in the Korean war, you can have a look if you like - your generosity would be appreciated!' - we had obviously made the right decision!!!!!!!!!!! Our new dorm was quite spectac, with Stephs bed on a stage! Next day we trammed it to St Kilda, where we enjoyed a couple of bevs and another night market! As you will see from the photos we managed to find some xmas decorations to brighten up our bunks! However this was not an easy task, after a 2 hour hunt we found some in a chinese corner shop!! Got a new roomy from Colchester called Neil, went out with him a couple of times - one time an excursion to the belgian beer bar followed by our first visit of many to Pj's the barmy army cricket HQ. A fair amount of alcohol was consumed, and we were up there with the best of them chanting all the songs!! Xmas day arrived very soon, and we FINALLY got to open our stockings! Which we opened with a glass of goon at 9am - thanks Jane! John had arrived at this point and Robyn retrieved more presents, which were warmly welcomed with another glass of goon - thanks Heather! Headed down to lunch in our hostel, everything looked good - but we now know looks are definately deceiving! After queueing for an hour for a wristband, we received a pitiful excuse for a xmas dinner, we think even the Korean war vet would have been disgusted! A lump of turkey fat, one boiled tat (yes boiled - not roasted!), a whole carrot, and a piece of pumpkin - jealous?!?! so a visit to Subway with some other dissapointed backpackers was in order! The day continued with goon and cards in the dorm, as the weather was also pitiful (the coldest xmas in Melbourne since records began!) what are the chances!! We didnt let it get us down and headed out for a chinese that evening before the hangover set in at 9pm! Boxing day we were up in good time, and headed to PJ's like any other avid cricket fans! Starting at 12 was a bad idea, by the time the Doughtys (Battisford crew- see photos!) turned up at 7pm we were already merry, as you can see from the photos the Doughtys participated in a few bevs! The night continued with raucous singing and dancing and fun was had by all. We attended day 3 of The Ashes, our seats were 4 rows from the front sitting next to cricket legend Jimmy Saville (see pics!). That evening, Robyn headed out to St Kilda for dinner with John where Steph enjoyed the company of Neil and Billy the trumpet, and ended up in the Casino and rolled in at 5am! The weather finally turned good a couple of days ago, so we headed down to St Kilda Beach to enjoy the rays that we had nearly forgotten about! On NYE, we boarded our pirate ship down to PJ's, where we made the most of the free drinks and finger food, Steph loving the salmon and guacamole, Robyn loving the guiness pies!! Watched some awesome fireworks on the riverbank at midnight. Our costumes were quite awesome - the 'twin pirate chicks' were invited up on stage with the band! Dont worry Steph didnt sing she was given a tambourine! Loving Melbourne but off to Sydney tommorow. More from us then. xxxxxxxxxx
