On Saturday the 26th we woke up early and made our way from the farm down to Fraser Island. Soon after we left the farm we noticed a massive fire in the bushes to the side of the road. As we got closer the smoke got thicker and we saw huge flames tearing through trees. We were told that this was a controlled fire, and that the Aboriginal people start the fires to burn the dry woodland before the sun makes it catch alight itself, similar to the fires that were in the news last year.
We stopped off at a town called Childers which is famous for it's backpacker murders (this was only a brief stopping point, for obvious reasons!) We also learnt that this is one of the easiest places for backpackers to get work.. i wonder why..!
After lunch we drove to Hervey Bay and caught the Ferry to Fraser Island which is the largest sand island in the world, and is world heritage protected. We had a slow couple of days here, as other than sand there wasn't much else about! However, our group did have a white t-shirt party on our first night at the Dingo Bar, where we all bought a white t-shirt and drew a design on it.
