We all headed out early to catch the train from Roncade to Venice. Even Brian came, despite wanting to spend the day climbing the mountain up to San Boldo Pass, but he caved to peer pressure, when we assured him it wouldn't be the same without him!
We arrived to a very hot and steamy Venice. We walked through the cobbled streets, lined with ornate palazzo's, interspersed with souvenir shops, selling beautifully decorated Venetian masks, and gelato parlours. The cloudy waters wound through the old city, beneath the stone bridges that connected the maze of streets.
We decided that the best way to see Venice was from the water and so all the ladies (except Rose, who'd stayed with the boys so she could go to the bar) took a Gondola ride on the canal. We floated through the narrow canals, with the Gondalia, shouting "Oi Oi" around every corner, to avoid a collision! We past the Gold Palazzo, which had been covered in gold, until it was taken by Napoleon. We also saw the Palazzo where Casanova was born! We floated out from the shade of the buildings and onto the Grand Canal, a wide canal, running through the heart of Venice city, before returning.
Back on dry land, we meandered through the streets, looking at the souvenirs and boutiques along the way. We met the boys just off Saint Marc's Square, where the very impressive cathedral is set in a vast square of plinths, statues and a ginormous bell tower, all covered in pigeons!
After a quick drink and a gelato for Laura and Holly, we took the water bus back to the train station and headed to the bars of Roncade for a Spritz (wine, sparkling water and aperol, an iridescent orange liqueur served as an apertif). Rob, Caesar and Efram moved the cars whilst the rest of us moved to the next bar, and returned after having a swift wine at the local pensioners club, where you can get a glass of wine for 40 cents! Retiring in Italy is looking more and more attractive every day!
We ate at a local pizzeria, which made gorgeous, fresh pizzas with the famous thin and crispy base, before heading back to Cison. Another fantastic but tiring day, so it was straight to bed for all of us!
