We drove towards the French border, passing through the ski resort of Courmeyeur, where we stopped for a quick drink, so that Rob could show us where he'd been skiing with his Dad.
The weather took a turn for the worse and the rain clouds came down below the mountain line, so we continued our journey towards the Mont Blanc Tunnel in the rain. Throughout the journey Laura passed on all the latest news of the Royal Wedding, via Twitter, downloading pictures of the important moments; Posh and Becks, the dress, the kiss, the Aston Martin and the second dress! We all felt very proud to be British that day and toasted the happy couple with a glass of Prosecco at the services, along with a little picnic of Italian salamis!
We left Italy and drove through the 8 mile tunnel, carved into the Mont Blanc Mountain and surfaced in France! We checked straight into our hotel, located just on the outskirts of Chamonix which was situated at the foot of the snowcapped Mont Blanc. As the weather was still grey and wet; huge grey clouds covering the peaks of the mountains, we decided to spend a couple of hours catching up on the coverage of The Royal Wedding on the BBC World channel and took a quick dip in the pool! We could see the glacier rolling down the mountain from the hot tub, which could have quite possibly been filled with glacier water! After a very quick and refreshing dip we had a quick change and headed into Chamonix for dinner.
We ate at Monchu restaurant, serving Savoyard specialities. We sampled the French Onion Soup and had Raclette (block of cheese, melted in front of coals, at the table and then scraped off and eaten with cold meats and potatoes) and Reblochonnade (rounds of cheese heated in a pan, under a grill at the table, served with pork sausage and potatoes). The food was delicious, but the 'cook your own' approach meant that we were all melting at the table as well as the cheese! So we really appreciated the cold mountain air as we walked back to the cars!
The next morning, we drove into a crisp Chamonix; the mountains looked spectacular against the bright blue back drop and soaked in sunshine. We walked around the alpine style, wooden clad buildings, stopping to have a hot chocolate in the square, before starting out on the journey to our next destination.
