Mendoza Wine Tour
Day 3 in Mendoza we joined forces with a large group of Brits and Aussies staying at our hostel and decided to take a bike tour of one of the local wine regions. We visited 3 different wineries, the first a German owned winery called Wienert which had a huge history and we learnt about the wine making process from grape to the bottle, then sampling their delights…with the white wine surprisingly enough being our favourite.
We then went on to a small independent winery, with the owner giving the tour. He was clearly extremely passionate about his work and his primitive wine making methods, but he could only speak Spanish which was difficult for a group of people with a limited command of the language. Unfortunately we didn't think his wines were up too much, although he apparently nearly had a heart attack when a London restaurant owner was selling his wine for £100 a bottle.
Finally we visited Alta Vista an extremely impressive medium sized winery with French owners. We defiantly saved the best until last. The winery was against the Andes and the building in which the wine is made was beautiful. Walking through you definitely got the feeling the way it was perceived was extremely important to them, as it was possibly the most branded place ever visited, even the store cupboard had there logo and the place was immaculate.
When it came to the wine tasting, it lived up to its reputation. We decided to splash out a whole £2 to try a glass of their premium Malbec (which is the local grape)…amazing taste. Overall being big fan's of red wines and having a thirst for increasing our knowledge of wines it was an awesome day. It was red hot and having the opportunity to get some exercise was a welcome treat.
