Rich & Beths World Tour
So we arrived in Phom Penh in the evening after a 7 hour bus journey which actually arrived on time (this is really quite something for South East Asia), As usually there was a bus scam where the bus drops you outside of the guest house they want you to stay in. As it turns out the guest house was really cool and had a big chilling out area to watch DVDs (great!) We spent the evening along the river front in a couple of bars and then back to our guest house to watch a film.
During our first full day in Phom Penh we walked and walked and walked around the city and then walked some more with some very achey feet. We started by heading up to the North part of the town where there is a beautiful lake and many guest houses overlooking the lake - one of the guesthouses was so beautiful we reserved a room to spend our final night in Pnom Penh there (Lee thanks for the recommendation - the guesthouse was fab). We then visited the Tuol Sleng Prison which was once a school but was taken over by the Khmer Rouge in 1975 where they held 21,000 Cambodians as prisoners. I won't go into too much detail about the prison however all i will say is that Rich and i were in total shock and disgust at what we saw as we learnt how these Innocent people were treated and the types of conditions they had to live in, we both walked around in total silence.
We then walked back to our guest house with a short diversion to see the Statue of Independence. The following day we went to the killing fields where over 3 million Cambodians were killed - as you can imagine another very heavy day.
In the evening we bumped into the couple met when travelling up the Mekong delta so we had a lovely relaxed evening with them and had a BBQ for dinner - the meat was amazing although still nothing like great British meat.
We had an early start the next day as we travelled up to Siem Reap. Siem Reap is a very small town with a couple of markets, a pretty river, bars and restaurants and not much else, travellers use Siem Reap as a place to stay to visit Angkor Wat which is WAT we did the following day.
We woke up at the crack of dawn and TUK a tuk tuk to Angkor Wat to watch sunrise. It was really spectacular watching the sun rise over the temple. We spent the day wandering around the whole area climbing up temples and taking a million and one photos. We were both really impressed and can understand how its become such a famous landmark.
Follwing another treacherous journey (and by this i mean 11 hours on a super bumpy bus, 7 hours on a train and a further 3 hours on a boat all in one go) we are now in Ko Tao (an island on the east coast of Thailand). Details to follow by rich shortly.
Take care everyone
Love Rich and Beth
