Day 2 Piran to Umag.
Absolute disaster. The longest and biggest climb so far and I forgot to turn on Strava before we left - so no record. On the plus side, I don’t think either one of us will forget about it any time soon.
We got away earlier today and were well into the hills and a third of the way in before the heat started. Taking it a bit easier today and the ride went well, arriving in Umag around 1:30pm.
We found a cafe under the trees overlooking the harbour and recharged with a couple of coffees, a gelati and a strawberry sundae for you know who.
Jean had tried to get an iced coffee in Piran but we were told that it was not yet in season. Not sure exactly what was out of season, the coffee, the milk, the ice cream or the ice.
Anyway, after checking in to the hotel here in Umag, and washing the cycling gear, we headed off to “the beach “ for a swim. It was straight in off the rock wall and it was very welcomed.
We are only in Umag for one night so no time to be tempted to climb castle towers or walk down endlessly narrow cobblestone streets. The “new” city has grown around the waters edge and there are wide tree lined streets right around the foreshore. Very pleasant indeed.
Tomorrow we are off to Poreć, 40kms (excluding side trips and missed turns) and 600m of climbing. This should test the friendship
