Well the brief interlude of doing nothing was abruptly brought to an end this morning with 10km hike. According to the tourist map, there was a short uphill section and then the path levelled out along the edge of the cliff for the next 8kms or so. Well, the "short uphill" lasted for almost 4kms and went from sea level to 160m and the "path" was a mix of loose rocks through the scrub and steps that the Greeks made when they were here some time BC!
After an hour of this, we decided to take a path to a nearby village for a coffee. That plan changed when we disturbed a snake having a sun bake in the middle of the path. Fortunately, it quickly disappeared into a crack in the stone wall and we decided that the main road was probably a better option. The village was a collection of houses with little sign of life and even less sign of a cafe, so we headed out along the road back to Cavtat arriving back in town after a hot and somewhat strenuous hike of 11kms that took us 3 hrs.
But despite all the sweat, Cavtat is certainly the place to round off our trip. It is spread across both sides of a small headland or peninsula, one side full of cafes all along a palm tree lined promenade, with small boats ferrying people to nearby islands and tourists eating ice creams, while the other side where we are is much quieter where the small open boats of various usages are moored. A walk from one side to the other and around the headland only takes about 45 mins ( with photo stops) and it's all flat.
However, it seems that today's hike was just a training run for what Jean has planned for tomorrow. I can hardly wait.
