Riots!
On our last evening in Bangkok we visited Khao Shan Road, a popular tourist center for Westerners. On the return journey, the roads around the democracy monument have been closed. We walk through anyway and see people all dressed in red t-shirts listening to speeches being broadcast from a lorry. After some enquires, I gather that these are anti-govornment protesters and that a large meeting is planned the next day.
In order to avoid the city center, we 'paid and went into the zoo' which turns out to be eerily quiet. As the afternoon progresses I notice the sound of the protesters again; they become louder as time passes. On the way back to the hostel, the taxi has to make several detours in order to avoid road closures. Later on we settle down to what turns out to be an 18 hour bus journey out of Bangkok.
