Seeking a break from Bangkok, we decided to head north of the city to the old capital of Thailand. Ayutthaya was the capital city until the 1750s when it was demolished by the Burmese. Throughout the center are many Aztec like ruins which are quite a contrast to Bangkok. Suffering from a lackof time, we decide to take a tuk tuk driver upon his offer and try to see as many temples as possible within an hour. Once finished we head for the station for the delayed train home.
Perhaps I ought to say something here about Thai trains. The only option today was a third class commuter trainwhich are noisy, slow. uncomfortable but very cheap. Most of the windows are permanently jammed open and several of the doors are missing. During the journey several people walk through the carriages trying to sell some very suspicous looking food and overpriced drinks. On the way home we stop to add some extra carriages; an operation which takes a remarkably long time considered the number of people who seem to be involved. We arrive in Bangkok around an hour and a half late.
