2/2/10 - day 55.
day 55! jesus! i cant believe ive done 55 of these things! got up at 7 after not having slept more than 2-3 hours at a time thanks to having to have the fan on, which was a loud as a jet engine, so that it could keep the mosquitoes away from me which i could hear swqeaking in my ear everytime i turned it off. why were there mosquitoes in the room? because there was huge gap in the window slats. this probably had something to do with the big ants that had made the bathroom floor and sink their home. so as soon as i woke up, i decided there was no way i was spending another night there.
had a large warm chicken salad bap for breakfast then walked up the road to yesterdays first choice hostel and thank god they now had space! such a nice hostel as well, one of the nicest ive been to for sure. it was basically a very big house that he stuck a couple extra beds in the rooms upstairs and invited travellers to stay there! the owner (javier) was a hell of a character as well as helpful. he gave me a map, told me where stuff was, which buses go where and when, and i was able to do some long overdue laundry there. basically all the things you need that you dont get at a hotel. when i told them where id had to stay last night, their facial expressions said it all.
went to the least conveniently situated bus terminal ever - bang in the middle of the market. so its takes ages to crawl through the chaos and how there isnt more fatalities there i dont know. got on the bus to go to lago de coatepeque a massive lake about an hour away. i bought a massive piece of watermelon on the bus which was an error because trying to eat that without a tissue or anything was only gonna have messy consequences. luckily the central american custom of 'everything goes out the bus window' came to my rescue and i was able to ditch it when i finished.
when i got there, i had a bit of a walk and then went for lunch at a place overlooking the lake which had an awesome view. when id finished the guy there told me buses go back tp santa ana every half hour. i was waiting 3 times that long for it in the heat and was not overly happy.
sat in the hostel garden for a while when i got back then went for cheese and bean stuffed pupusas at an incredibly cheery comdeor just 2 blocks away. met some other people staying at the hostel when i got back - aussie nick, a swiss couple, a canadian-french guy, 2 argentinian girls and a girl from hemel hempstead. we all went out that night with javier and his friends to a really cool rasta bar where we also bimped into the 3 irish girls id arrived in santa ana with.
all javier's mates were really talkative (and i suspect a little but drunk) with all of us. we had a few beers there, some dude randomly did some fire spinning and we left about half 12. we got back thinking the night was over but then javier said we could go to another bar he knew really close by so before we knew it we were back in the back of his pickup and off to a very dimly lit bar with a jukebox which we plied with endless quarters. stayed there til about half 2, got to bed soon after 3 pretty sure that i would not be getting up as planned to do a volcano hike the next day.
