27/1/10 - day 49.
had planned another day night in hinduras but turns out you cant cross the border into el salvador where i wanted to, you can only go the other way - apparently due to some border dispute. so was up at half 5, 6am bus bsck to santa rosa, another one to a small town called nueva ocotepeque and a short shared taxi ride to the border at el poy. easiest border crossing yet. because i was the only one there!
after immigration i got on another bus straight away to la palma. half an hour later i got off the bus there as i had no money and before i went any further i thought it´d be useful to hit a bank and decide where i wanted to get to. i usually have a plan in place but i was having trouble deciding how far to go. decided to get on the next bus that came through la palma and go to the capital san salvador. since it was still only early afternoon when i got there i decided to go further on east to san miguel and stop there for the night, just a couple hours short of where i would have been if id crossed the border where i had wanted to.
throughout the day id been faced with nothing but happy, smiling faces and "hello where are you from´s" from locals who passed me by which was a welcome change after the hostility of gracias' folk! this trend continued when i got off the bus in san miguel and, probably looking lost, was approached by a guy who pointed me in the direction of his hotel just 1 block away. it was cheap, in a safe area and fine for a night so i took it.
after dumping my stuff off, i went to a comedor across the street where i actually had some meat that wasnt beef or chicken! pork! they lady that served me was happy to see me it seemed and while i was eating popped her head round the corner to ask me how it was. before i'd gone over a couple of the guys working at the hotel told me to ask for "gordo" which means like "fatty" in spanish. they use it as an affectionate term over here, but still there was no way i was gonna go over there, and say alright fatty to total strangers.
later at the hotel, the people there helped me with my onward journey as there was nothing to keep me in san miguel.
