31/1/10 - day 53.
up at half 7, 8am bus back to santiago de maria, villa el triunfo then san salvador. when i got to villa el triunfo, fella came up to me from one of the buses asked me where i was going, i said san salvador and then he grabbed my bag, as if he was just being helpful and carrying it for me, and just as others were asking me the same thing he started sprinting to the bus before any other buses going there could snare me. again, it worked as it forced me to go with him, but an ethically questionable sales technique none the less.
changed buses in san salvador for a bus to Suchitoto, and although its not very foar away (50km) it took about 2 hours due to the horrendous traffic in the capital. on the way, some lad got on ans stood up at the front and started some speech that i knew would inevitably end with him asking for some money. i was half-listening trying to understand what he was saying but he really got my attention when he lifted up his vest to reveal a large bandage on the side of his stomach and what appeared to be a big bag of blood hanging from it. i was nearly sick, it was disgusting so i had to look away. i did give him 20 odd cents even though i didnt really know what wasup with him.
suchitoto is one of the more touristy places in el salvador, both for natives and non-natives especially at weekends. its a pretty, colonial style, cobblestone streeted, white-washed buildinged town that reminded me of Granada in nicaragua. when i got off the bus i went to the tourist office which was shut (useful) but they had a map listing accomodation on the door. while reading it, a dude asked me if i wanted to stay at his hostel. it was close and cheap so i did. it had a tv which i put on as soon as i got there to find a replay of the earlier arsenal - man utd game so i watched the 2nd half of that and then went for lunch at an unreasonably priced cafe.
went for a walk around the streets. it being a sunday it was very busy in the leafy central park with families occupying all the benches and kids running around. also there were heaps of craft market stalls and street vendors all overlooked by a big white church and centred around a big fountain, which loads of people were having theor photo taken with for some reason. despite only hazy sunshine i felt incredibly hot so i went back to my room to escape the heat and have another cold shower.
after a while i walked down a very steep slope to have a peek at lake suchitlan, took a few snaps, then walked back up and really fancied a beer so found a bar at the side of the park and necked a few while doing some people watching (helen and laura you would have loved it!) later, i went for a pupusa dinner and then went back to the hostel. it was only about half 9 but after several time of knocking on the door, the guy didnt answer to let me in. eventually, an american girl appeared, who was wrapped in her duvet and clearly irked at the disturbance, to let me in. after she'd finished vocalising a load of expletives, aimed at the guy that should have opéned the door, and not me (i think) i went to bed.
