As soon as we arrived we were kitted out with socks, boots, gloves, hat, crampons, waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers. It seemed a bit like overkill, but hey - they were the experts. It turns out, they actually know what they are doing - it rained heavily on us for around 75% of the time we were on the ice, and as we were booked for a full day walk, that was quite a lot of rain. Oh, just out of interest - has anyone ever owned a waterproof that actually IS?!
Anyway - enough of that. The walk was amazing as we climbed and walked about on one of the worlds few tropical glaciers (yes, really). The crampons were great once we got used to them - it is difficult to trust that they will work at the beginning as the mind is programmed to think that ice is slippery! It was really interesting to hear all about the glacier formation etc but just a shame that the weather was so awful so we didn't see as much blue ice as we would have liked.
In the evening we were planning on cooking at our campsite but due to the continued rain we took the easy way out and ate in a restaurant - it was bad timing as there is a 20% surcharge on the 2nd January as it is a public holiday here! Mind you - it was warm and dry.
