Next off to the Coromandel Peninsula, and mussels... yum! (as you have probably guessed it is famous for it's mussels). They are huge and delicious steamed, smoked and probably grilled. Also the sun reappeared so we had a couple of very nice walks including a visit to the beautiful Cathedral Cove- we left wishing that we had more time to relax on the beach.
Lake Taupo is beautiful, as everything seems to be in NZ! We have seen a number of things here, see the photos, but are particularly keen to trek the Tongarino Alpine pass, an 8 hour trek through the mountains and volcanoes just south of the lake. However unfortunately the weather has taken a turn for the worse so we were not able to do it today, we are hoping to come back in a few days to, however the forecast is not very good. Oh well never mind! Last night we went to Carols in the park in an attempt to feel Christmassy... however I have to tell you, very quietly, that they were awful! People had come with full picnics as if going to Ascot etc to listen to the local music school perform led by their head teacher who was the worst of the lot! We left after 15 minutes very disappointed and having contemplated rushing the stage to put everybody out of their misery. (Certainly Tidmarsh or Northwold village carol singers are a lot better!!!)
Next we are off to the Waitomo caves to see glow-worms and tube (in giant rubber rings) through the caves. Then off down to Wellington and the South Island for Christmas.
I hope that you are all well and enjoying the run in to Christmas, have a good day.
