The final destination of the ´organised´part of the trip and where we had to say goodbye to all the friends we have made over the last few months which was evry sad, especially as we may not see some of the again (spread all over the world). Our last supper didn´t quite work out as the various taxi drivers couldn´t find the restaurant we had all agreed to meet in, and as a result we all got split up so we had dinner in a Jazz cafe with Tracey and Kathy. It actually turned out to be a great evening despite our depleted numbers - the addition of the jazz band added to an already great atmosphere.
On the day we flew out, the 4 of us climbed to the top of the belltower of Quito Basillica which was the most scary thing we have done by far! The stairs were OK. The spiral staircase that followed was very narrow, steep and wobbly. The metal near-vertical shallow steps that followed had grating (holding your toes in) missing and handrails that came away in your hand when you grabbed them. The thin metal vertical ladders that followed that were terrifying. There is scant health and safety here and the Basillica seemed to be crumbling around us (they don´t clear away the evidence of this so there are plenty of concrete chunks laying around far below for you to see as you are climbing ever higher).
Obviously we got up and down in one piece so Richard nipped into the Basillica itself and said a quick prayer of thanks!
Later that day we hopped on a plane and are now in Santiago, Chile, heading off to Buenos Aires tomorrow.
The messages from you on our blog are drying up - keep them coming! (Thanks Kev)
