So after our 13hr bus ride down to Hervey Bay for Fraser Island the fun started!!! We met our group which consisted of Chris from Scotland, Austin from England, Steve from New Zeland, Edd from Holland, Jacey and Kendra from the USA. Sarah from Germany and Johanna and Terese from Sweden.
First things first was to organise the food and drink that we where going to take, so off to the bottle shop we went and the supermarket to get supplies. After that we all got to know each other before heading to bed for our 6.45am start the next day to pack and head to Fraser Island.
The next morning we packed up our 4wd and set off for the Barge with austin driving the first stretch. Once on the Island we headed to Lake Wabby, which is a Lake that a giant sand dune is slowly creaping down into it and will not be there in the next 10-15years. On the way however we got slighly lost and ended up on the wrong side of the island at Kingfisher Bay, which was a fun drive but maybe lost us half an hour or so at Lake Wabby. It was amazing, at times it felt like you could be walking across the Sahara just sand as far as you could see!!
After Lake Wabby I took over some driving for a bit and got to do some 4wd along the sand roads and our onto the beach, which was great fun, we then headed up until we arrived at our camp site for the night where we pitched our tents and started cooking tea, we didnt have any luxurys since our campsite was a Sand dune. That night we all had a drink and I learned to how to twirl fire on chains, Steve had been doing it for a few months and was happy to show us all how to do it, if the day hadnt been cool enough then this made it even better!!! at first it was a bit nerve racking but in the end is was very good fun!! (The pics are either me or Steve, kinda difficult to remeber who was who, although the better pics are prob Steve!!)
It was then off to bed for our early start the next day. Unfortunatly we had only set times that we could drive along the beach at, during low tide and during daylight hours, this meant we only had till 9am to get to a proper campsite, do the dishes, shower and have breakfast. Then it was up to Indian heads, down from the bottom of Indian Heads it is a breeding ground for Tiger sharks, as well as dolphins and turtles, it is also very high and a bit off putting!!! After Lunch at 12:30pm we could drive along the beach again and headed to Cathedral Service area to buy more Ice for cool drinks that night. We then headed on down to Maheno wreck which ran aground in 1935 and is nearly rusted away. Then we stopped at Eli creek which wasnt anything to cool, but was nice to have a wee paddle in.
Then we headed down to the Campsite for the night and got some more water. That night at the campsite we ended up with a dingo hanging around most of the night who at one point stole an esky and ripped open a bag of goon(4litres of wine for $9 for those who dont know). Then we played with some more fire on the beach before heading to bed ready for the morning.
In the moring we headed South to come up by some of the smaller lakes before heading to Lake Mckenzie, we came across some beautiful empty Lakes which we basicly had to ourselves so we stayed and played in the water and relaxed on the sand before we headed up to the main Lake, which we kept getting told we should spend as much time as possible at....although when we got there it was a slightly larger busier version of where we had already been, so was a bit of a dissapointment, still amazing, just not as good!! We could have done with another few dyas to explore everything, but by this stage you had sand in places you didnt know existed, when u ate, there was sand, drank etc......
So I drove back for the ferry while the passengers in the back tried to drink goon, which was fun as they couldnt see the bumps coming so became a bit of a game. it was then back to base to unload get our deposit back and get a new vehicle for the groups the next day!!!!
That night it was off to bed early for our bus to Tin Can bay in the moring to see/feed the wild dophins!!!
