After a busy few days doing tours of the national parks we were then up at 5.30am for our 3 day bus trip to Alice Springs. No rest for the wicked!! Our first stop was Katherine were we went swimming in the gorge (until we seen a commotion in the water and thought it may be crocs so we made a sharp exit) We then went canoeing up the gorge which was amazing. We both really enjoyed it but our shoulders were sore after it. We then headed up to our campsite where we had dinner and some drinks and a bit of diferidoo playing before calling it a night. Not as scary creatures as our last campsite but we did see a treefrog in the mens toilets and a huntsman spider in the ladies. eeek. The next day we were up early and off to Metaranka thermal pools (34C) which was nice although we had to walk through a bat infested forest to get there and that was not enjoyable. they were screeching and going crazy. bit scary!! After that we headed to Daly waters outback pub which is the most remote in Australia. Wad really nice and stopped for a beer and a burger before going back on the road to see the 1st international airport in Oz. Not used for international flights anymore but the flying doctors still use it sometimes. We stopped at lots of memorials on the way for John Macdowell Stuart who was a fifer (yay mon the fifers) who came to OZ and tried to improve the communication time between britain and Australia and the Stuart highway follows his footsteps in his attempt to travel from Adelaide north. Was quite interesting.
We then headed to our campsite where we rolled out our swags and slept under the stars. was quite an experience. (although considering the northern territory has 8 out of the 10 deadly snakes and spiders in the world....i feel it was quite a brave decision). We woke up to parrots flying over our heads as the sun was rising. Was quite spectacular. We then headed to Devils Marbles which we got some great pics of. They were created by magma being pushed up into the sandstone and over the years the sandstone has eroded away but the harder magma has stayed and created these marble like stones. We then went to a wee art centre called Ti tree and had lunch and watched a cool thunderstorm. We then proceeded on the last part of our journey to Alice and drove through a sandstorm which was quite cool. We also stopped at the Tropic of Capricorn before arriving in Alice Springs last night. We went out for dinner and drinks with the group before collapsing in a heap after our busy last 10 days. Today we have a relaxing day by the pool but its up early again tomorrow as we're off to Ayers rock. Cant wait. Will update soon x
