India and Nepal 2022
Having seen the Burma death railway on the Thailand side at Kanchanburi a few years ago, I am keen to see the war cemetery at Thazambuyat in at the start of the railway in Myanmar (Burma)
The war cemetery is yet again beautifully kept by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the land is being restored following the wet season. Places like this always bring about an emotional response.
Young men, some younger than my own sons are buried here. The inscription 'There's some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England ' chokes me up. As does a recent note in the visitors book from a person who lives in Manningtree, near my own home, which says 'my father who I never knew. So proud'
Time to move on and visit the death railway museum which is a very poor memorial lacking in dignity and respect. 'One life, one sleeper' is all you need to know about mans inhumanity to fellow man.
