Another project I have helped in was in Samox, Coban. Me and Greg had to pick up 12 university of Michigan students from the airport in Guatemala City. Their group 'Salud en Accion' 'Health in Action' was arriving in Guatemala to provide Samox with bio-filters and health education. They were great craic and full of enthusiasm. Their talks on health education were attended by almost everyone in the community and their scientific research into the local water sources were of great interest amongst the people there. They received the results they were expecting and the river water was heavily contaminated with the e-coli virus. Then bio-filters they engineered were amazing inventions requiring only stones and three different types of sand to turn dirty river water into clean drinking water. One thing that shocked us all was how many people in the area were already boiling the water to clean it. The students explained this was the best method possible to clean water and told them the bio-filters weren't meant to replace the process of boiling. Due to this the students built two bio-filters instead of the five they had planned and donated the remaining materials to the local school. The level of dental hygiene amongst the children there was non-existent and only about five per cent of the kids had shoes. This is something the university group is going to focus on when they return there in a years time. After working with them for a week CasaSito was happy to receive an application from Christie (one of the students) to volunteer with the CasaSito Association for three months in the summer. To finish the week long research we took a trip up Volcano Pacaya - unfortunately no lava but the views were amazing and I think everyone was sad to leave.
