The first project I worked on was in Chocantariy just outside Momostenango. My boss Greg couldn't make it up so I went with another volunteer (Wayne from Canada) and we hopped on three chicken buses in total to get to Pedro's house - the recipient of the water tank. As everything was completely new to me I was glad to have someone there with a lot of experience building rainwater catchment systems (Nick Bardot from New Hampshire, USA). We got straight to work and everything was going fine until we realized someone from the village had stolen an important part of the tank and ripped it up to put round her garden fence! This was a big obstacle to our work and it meant having to buy lots of new materials and creating a new costal (what you use to give the top part of the cement tank its shape) from scratch. Although this was a set back Nick explained it's a common problem and very few projects make it to the end without hiccups. With everything we needed rattled on and finished the tank in just under a week. It was a great feeling of achievement for us all and the tanks finished volume was 7-8000 litres which is a lot bigger than the tank CasaSito had made before. This bigger tank is now our new model and means people are much more unlikely to run out of water during the dry season.
