After a slight week of stress with class registration, my friends and I left on Thursday for Dublin and Arthur's Day. Now for those of you who do not know what Arthur's day is, it is a holiday celebrated throughout the world which celebrates the anniversary of the brewing of Guinness. Essentially it is an excuse for people to drink Guiness in excess. At 17.59 (5:59 pm) everyone raises a wee pint "to Arthur" and thus the event comences. We arrived in Dublin about an hour before the event. By the time we found our hostel and had checked into our rooms we had minutes until the toast. When we went downstair we saw that it was on the TV and that the other guests and employees were getting ready to join the toast. When the clock changes to 17.59 it sounded like the world errupted. A loud cheer eminated through Dublin with people everywhere toasting to Aurthur Guinness and his marvelous invention. It was truely spectacular to experience. After a long nigh of singing and dancing in the city, we returned to the hostel and went to bed.
The next morning we started exploring the city. We got tickets for a city bus tour and began to see the sights. After about half an hour on the bus and checking out Trinity College we stopped at a wee pub for lunch where I had my first shepherds pie in Ireland. It was just what the doctor ordered. It warmed me to my bones and may have been the most delicious meal I ever had.
When we finished lunch we hopped back on the bus and saw some more of the city. We decided to get off at the Guiness factory stop to see how Arthur made his legendary beer. It is actually very interesting to learn about and to see. One of my favorite parts was where they had a history of their advertisements and merchandise. Its remarkable to see how guiness has affected our society and how prevalent this one drink is.
We then returned to the hostel to rest up before dinner. We went to a little restaurant that night down near Temple Bar and afterwards we explored the street for some live music. My Canadian friend made friends with the band. When they finished their set at the one pub we then followed them to the next bar. They were very good singing a mix of traditional irish songs and covers of some more modern tracks.
On Saturday morning we woke up early yet again to get breakfast and to go out again for the day. At around 10 we left the hostel to do some souvenier shopping and exploring. We ended up at St. Patrick's Cathedral and payed to take a look inside. I am always shocked by the beatuy and majesty of these medieval works of art and science. I just don't understand how the people of this time could make such beautiful sprawling masterpieces and then paint such horribly bland pictures.
After a well needed lunch, we went to Dublin Castle and to the library to look at one of their new exhibits. We barely made it back to the hostel in time to catch the bus back to Belfast.
Ok That's it for blog post 3. Hope you are all enjoying this and please let me know if you have quesitons or whatever.
Love,
Renate
