One of the best things about studying in Northern Ireland is that I don't have class on Fridays. So my friends and I often look for things to do when we aren't travelling. This one Friday my friends Brianna, Eriko, and I took the train to a little coastal town called Bangor. We left campus at around mid-morning and took hour long train ride from Belfast out to the coast. When we arrived we found a cute little town with a street consisting of shops and a shopping centre, a harbour with a lot of sail boats, and a very beautiful coast.
We began by walking down the street towards the shore, stopping in some shops on the way and stopped at a little cafeteria for lunch. We then continued down to the shore and walked along the pier. From here we had some very beautiful views of the coastline, the harbour with all the sail boats docked, and the town behind us. We spent about an hour walking around by the water before we headed back into town and up to their castle.
Castle is actually an overstatement; it was more like an estate house. We went through their little museum, which was pretty small and then made our way through the grounds to the Victorian Gardens. The park we walked through to get to these gardens made me think of what I imagined the forests too look like while I read the Chronicles of Narnia, which is interesting because C.S. Lewis grew up in Belfast. Anyways, after walking through this park we reached a walled garden. The outside looked vary barren, but as we walked through the gate all thought of the sparce growth outside was forgotten. There were flowers and plants everywhere. The garden had this fantastic aroma of fresh flowers that was so pleasant to be in. I will be sure to post some pictures from this garden because it was truly beautiful.
We finished walking around the garden at around 5 o'clock and we needed to get back to campus for dinner. We headed back into town, hopped on the train back to Belfast, and we all took naps on the train home. Definitely a good day.
