New Years
After leaving the Ssese Islands we made our way back to project, we had to go to Kampala first in order to get a taxi to Mubende; whilst sitting in the back of a taxi in the middle of Kampalain a traffic jam I got my first item stolen. A guy had been walking outside the window but I hadn't really noticed, next moment he snatched my bracelet off my wrist and ran off-it was horrible because I couldn't do anything! When we got back to project I also broke my last pair of flipflops my 2 pound black mens ones from Home Bargains! Anyway after a day at project and a good amount of clothes washed Naomi and I headed back to Kampala for New Years Eve. All us volunteers were there and we decided that all the girls should be a colour and all the lads bought hilarious suit jackets from Owino! The picking of colours was not entirely fair, as writer of the colours and 1st picker, I thought that selecting a 2nd time (after selecting pink, PINK the first time) was entirely reasonable. I ended up being white and found a nice little white dress in Owino for 15000sh (about 4 pounds). After finding our outfits we all headed to Blair and Greggs project on the night of the 30th. I thought our accommodation was amazing, but their house isn't even like a Ugandan house! Their living room is immense with a carpet (the 1st carpet I have seen in East Africa) DSTV and comfy sofas and chairs. We then watched 3 episodes of the 3rd series of Inbetweeners that made me incredibly happy! Next day we awoke to a Ugandan belting out his Christmas hymns at 7 in the morning. We then went back to Kampala and we all prepared ourselves for new New Tears. The lads looked really dapper in their suit jackets and all us girls were looking rather good in our variety of spandex metallic leggings and leopard print!
We started the journey into town all crammed in one matatu and got approximately a quarter of a mile down the road when the driver drove straight into the side of a privately owned car! We all managed to scramble out and into a new one pretty swiftly, although it took quite a long time to get to our destination due to the heaving traffic in central Kampala. In the end we arrived at Club Silk, where there was a ridiculously long queue right down the street to get in. Luckily Jamal (Ugandan singer) spotted the muzungus and fast tracked us to the front of the queue. As we were getting through security fireworks went off and that was New Years-no countdown at all. We got into club Silk to find a huge stage with immense lighting and sound and the place was absolutely packed. The event wasn't actually in Club Silk, but was outside in a huge street concert. The Djs were really good and so were the Ugandan acts, the crowd went wild. I didn't realize quite how many people were in the crowd until some of us got heaved up onto stage by Chameleon (another Ugandan artist). The concert was amazing and we stayed there for a good few hours. Afterwards we went to a club near by where Chameleon paid 150000sh fro 10 of us to get in (50 pounds) and then bought us all drinks-nice man (the perks of being muzungus). It was an amazing night and definitely the best New Years so far.
