Hi everyone,
Yesterday was a sad day as I said goodbye to Nadia and Lizzie, the two girls from the tour group who I had been with the last few days. We all really enjoyed spending the two nights at Hanmer Springs, relaxing in the thermal pools and just spending some quiet evenings by the log fire they had going in the hostel...really welcomed after such a busy two weeks! Lizzie flew to Sydney yesterday and Nadia went to Wanaka (another part of NZ) to find some work but I still had a couple of days around the area until my flight on Friday. I didn't want to stay in Christchurch for two nights so I have come down to Akaroa which is a small town about 1 and half hours from Christchurch. I got the bus down here yesterday morning and am leaving this afternoon.
I knew that Akaroa was a fairly quiet place but I didn't know it would be this quiet!!! It's very pretty but also very cold, it would be nice in the summer i imagine but in winter there is hardly anything to do. I was very excited when I found the 'cinema' (aka a small shack) but then read it was closed for winter...what kind of cinema closes for winter?!! I have spent a lot of my time walking, taking pictures, reading, thinking and writing my diary, so in that sense it has been nice to relax i guess. I stayed at a nice hostel last night (one of only 2 in the town), it was small and homely and the bed was compfy, as such i had a great night's sleep. After more walking this morning i have come across a gem - the local library, with FREE internet (for 1 hour), yes FREEEEE!!! that has made me very happy. So after i've finished writing this I only have another hour to kill here then I get my bus at 4 (which i must not miss as there is only 1 a day!).
Anyway, even though it may sound like it, i am not complaining. It's just this sort of place may have been better for a day trip, and maybe more suited to mothers, or even grandmothers!
Hope you are all well. After a night in Christchurch tonight, i am off to Melbourne tomorrow. I have loved New Zealand so much and don't really want to leave, but as they say, all good things must come to an end. Plus I'm leaving with some fanstastic memories which I'll cherish forever.
