well... we survived carnival in salvador and we will be back again it was amazing! The streets are packed with people dancing and selling drinks. The blocos (floats) are bigger and better than notting hill with top artists performing on them. You pay for tickets to either follow the bloco, or a camarote, which is like an vip area on the carnival route with balconies so you can watch the blocos go by and they normally have free bars with food too! we did a camarote which was messy! 11am till 11pm with free bar... you can only imagine the state we were in! carnival starts about 4pm till 4am and my feet are killing me. There is a huge police presence though and you feel quiet safe although a few people from the hostel had a few incidents with fights, robbing and so on. if you keep you wits about you don´t flaunt cameras or jewellry you will be fine. Don´t take out too much money either and find good hiding places, they know all about bras, shoes, and money belts and head there 1st! The music was amazing and we have bought some cd´to bring home. I was really sad to leave the hostel as it was the best we´ve stayed in so far. If your visiting salvador stay at Alpha hostel, Rue Edvardo Diniz Grancalves 128, barra... its the best hostel in the world with flat screen lcd tv and sky, gorgeous breakfasts and the best hosts ever (tell fernanda and elena the twins recomended you!) We cheated and got a flight instead of an 11 hour bus to porto seguro (it was a bargain mum don´t worry) and we arrived to find out carnival is still on for 2 more days here!!! So last night we went and ate a kilo of meat (we have a travel buddy now so it was beteween 3 of us!) and then had a couple of caipirinahs and beers whilst dancing away. Its a lot smaller and more low key than salvador which is good but still has blocos and artists performing. The hostel we are staying at is right in the thick of it so when we went to bed this morning it sounded like carnival was in our room! we´re making our way to Argentina via a few spots on the coast so we´ll update you again once we move on!
