Hey everybody!
Thanks so much for all the birthday messages, it totally made our day! We thought you had all forgotten about us as we only had a phone call from Lloyd and a text from Edi! But you all came through!!
We're sorry we have been so slack on the blog fronts lately too. We could blame the high internet costs in Belize but we have left it so long we both have just been putting off writing it cause it would be so long! So here is a quick overview....
The weather picked up in Utila so we stayed on there for 10 days altogether. Lots of snorkeling, sunbathing, bike riding and general fun. Made lots of great friends and hung out every night in Tranquilla bar (the place to be). Remember Bar in the bush mentioned in the last blog with the suspect balloons? Well Friday night they have the best 'locals' night playing hip hop, reggaeton and my kind of music, so that was great.
Left Utila and went back to San Pedro Sula, mainland Honduras. Spend another 2 days there then got a 9 hour bus to Guatemala City. I know we hadn't planned to go to Guatemala but we were making our way to Belize and originally we had planned to go by boat from Honduras but our Norwegian friend we met in Utila had just taken that boat journey and they thought they were gonna die!!! So we decided to travel overland!
From Guatemala City we took a bus straight up to Flores in the North. The bus journey was the worst so far! The air con was set to freezing, we were right at the front of the bus, they showed all 3 toy story movies back to back and the door broke half way through the journey so the wind was directly hitting us! Arrived safely though!Flores is a beautiful little town with cobbled streets, in the middle of a lake. We did a jungle tour and visited the majestic Tikal Ruins - Wow!
We next took a minibus to Belize. We had to get out at the Guatemala Border pay our exit tax and then walk 300m in 40 degrees heat across to the Belize arrivals border! There we changed our quetzal (Guatemalan currency) for Belize dollars which have the Queen on them! The officials who stamped our passports said we could stay forever!! They couldn't believe we were English! We then got back on the minibus and continued to Belize City.
Now Belize City is not what we thought it would be. Its small and undeveloped and quite poor. We also arrive on a Sunday which didn't help cause there wasn't much to do. We did get our hair relaxed though so that was good. We were both so sick of curls! Apparently Belize city is about knowing people to show you around which we now do so we are gonna try it out again this weekend when we leave Caye Caulker!
So on Tuesday we left Belize City and came by water taxi to Caye Caulker. This place is a friendly, tranquil paradise! The whole Caye can be walked around in a few hours. There are only 3 main roads - front street, middle & back street so you cant get lost. The roads are all sand roads and there are no cars just golf buggies and bikes! You can see the beautiful Caribbean sea from whichever direction you are standing. The people are so friendly (we cannot just walk down the street we have to give triple the time to stop and talk to all our island family!) The food is great Caribbean/Latin fusion and the most popular drink is called a panty ripper (coconut rum with pineapple) which is so good but very embarrassing to order! Belize is very close to Jamaica and lots of people emigrated here so they speak Patios and its so like a little JA!
We've had a great time here so far. Yesterday rained and was very windy. Apparently it's something called a Northern which takes a couple of days to pass. Last night was so cold I had to get up and put on a sweater and blankets! But by noon today the sun was back again, thank the Lord! We planned to go sailing with Ras on his red gold & green boat but he didn't want to chance the weather changing :-(
We will go tomorrow though. So instead we got free drinks at the split bar (a swimming area see photos) all day and had great fun with all our friends. We even got chocolate birthday cake from the local cake man! We are going out for a nice dinner when I have finished writing this! Following by Ladies night at Ocean View disco with more drinking and dancing!
So once again thank you all for showing us love from so far away (mum you had us in tears with your message in the internet cafe)!
We promise to keep up to date from now on and will add lots more pics as soon as we are out of Belize!
Cant believe we will be home in 2 weeks!!! Happy to see you all again, but a little scared and sad at the same time! oh and we are homeless when we get back so send all offers of spare rooms to the message board!!!!
Love you all sooooo much!
