After a long bus ride (lots of stops) we arrived to Campo Grande at 6:30am and we were glad to feel the heat. A sucker for freebies we signed up for a pantanal tour with the HI hostel as it was offering a free night accommodation before the tour.
After a good night sleep and an awesome fresh fruit buffet breakie we headed out to the Pantanal. With no air con in the transport van we were very happy to arrive at our campspot 3 hrs later. We were told it was safe to swim in the river, so put on our togs and headed down to the river bank only to find 4 caimains (like aligators) there. Took a bit of convincing but managed to get in. Mark and a few others took on the dare and swam to the other side and back, not me though!
Feeling tired after a long day, we headed to bed, which was a hammock, and had a hell of a first night.... I woke up in the middle of the night vomiting, s***s, and fever and got worried that I might have malaria (as we were naughty and stopped taking our malaria tablets back in africa), so felt better when Mark was the same a few hours after me, and realized it was just a bad case of food posioning.
Being sick put a bit of a downer on the tour, as we were too weak to do some of the activities (missed out on horseriding) and the 35 degree heat was unbareable so spent the days having cold showers. Also, the part of the pantanal we were in felt like being on a farm as there were fences everywhere. Still, we got to go paranha fishing and saw alot of aligators and different types of birds.
