It seems we arrived in Cordoba at the wrong time - the surrounding countryside is the main attraction there and there were no tours running to the country due to the amount of rain they had had, however we were there at the weekend so we nibbled on local cakes and pastries at the crafts market. The hostel was OK but the breakfast wasnt very good, anyway we left Cordoba a bit earlier than planned and came to Salta in the north. We really like Salta, theres a great museum here (Raes geeky side coming out) that documents the finding of 3 children that were ritually killed and buried in the Andes (we aren´t far from the Andes here) about 500 years ago. They have one of the mummies - a 15 year old Incan girl- on display, and because of the temperature of her burial site (which is the highest archaeological site in the world) she has been almost perfectly preserved. Her hair looks just braided, her clothes have retained their detail and colour, and apart from her leathery skin, it is as though she could sit up, open her eyes and say hello at any second it was amazing. Obviously we were not allowed to take photos so that description will have to be enough for you. We did get to take lots of photos on our tour to Cachi however. Cachi is a small & traditional village just south of Salta where we did a small hike to a very colourful cementery. On the way we drove through beautiful mountains at around 3,500 metres above sea level. We also stopped at the National Cacti Park. The photos look like something from the set of a Western film.. We saw 2 Black Widow Spiders arrg! that can kill 3 adults with one bite or 5 children, I asked how long it would take for me to die if I got bitten and was told half an hour.. Since we had just driven 3 hours from the nearest town through mostly remote terrain, I stood well back and Mark used the cameras highest zoom setting to get the photos. We now also know all the secrets to Empanadas and how to make them as we spent one night cooking them for ourselves at a lesson that the hostel offered. We can even tell the different flavours just by the way the crust has been folded - aren´t we clever! And like the Tango show with a BBQ in Buenos Aires, this time we BBQed to folkoric music and dancing. We are headed to Bolivia tonight to Uyuni and the Salt Flats and we are soooo excited!! love Rae and MArk xoxox
