Rachel's Eurotrip
PARIS PT I
Bonjour from Paris!
I am writing this from paris, but it likely wont make it on the website until I am back in Seville..our hotel doesnt have internet unfortunately. But, it is great and right in the heart of paris, about a 10 minute walk to the Eiffel tower.
Adam and I both got here midday Saturday, and we headed over to the Eiffel Tower right away. It was very cool, obviously a tourist trap, but definitely worth the wait. Of course I was FREEZING when we got to the top (didnt actually go to the top because the wait was about an hour and the wait to the 2nd stop was only about 15 minutes and there was still a great view). But Adam showed me the different parts of france and we waiting in line to get the hell out of there because I couldnt feel my toes.
We got up really early Sunday to get to the louvre by opening. By luck, the first sunday of every month is a free day at the louvre, so we didnt have to pay, but it was also mobbed! But, since we got there right as it opened, we went straight to the Mona Lisa and adam said it was the closest hes ever been able to get to it (there is a roped off area around it and everyone just crowds into it) for some reason you cant take pictures (even without flash) anywhere in the renaissance paintings wing..I got one in of the wreck of the medusa, but the security was too tight around the mona lisa for them not to notice me...it was really small too, just like everyone says!
After the Louvre we walked down the Champps E'lysee and EVERYTHING was closed, it was eerie. Id expect that in a small city like sevilla but i couldnt imagine a metropolis like paris would clothes all their designer stores on sunday. Even barcelona had everything open on sunday. We also walked down a street close to the champs elysee that had every imaginable highend designer (all closed of course) it was crazy...hermes, chanel, gucci, prada, pierre cardin, yves st laurent..and a bunch of others, it was slightly nauseating...i guess it was a good thing they were all closed or i would have to see all the people who shop in those kinds of stores too haha
at the end of the street we saw the arc de triumph which was cool. we didnt go to the top though because as expected I was freezing by this point and just wanted to get home!
That night we went on a boat cruise along the Siene which was pretty and there was english commentation so we could learn a bit about the different neighborhoods and buildings. We then went to dinner, and it was about 930 and almost all the restaurants were closed, it was really wierd! even in america i feel like at 930 restaurants are still open.
Today we went and got omlettes for breakfast because I was told they are really good here and they are! (and considering the only omlettes in spain are potatoes with a teeny bit of egg i think anything would be great!) Then we attempted to walk to the Notre Dame, but got caught in a rain/snow/hail storm so we got on a bus.
Notre Dame was cool, we climbed to the top of the tower which as adam says has the best view of paris. i think there were over 400 steps! I had to take a lot of breathers...
Then we went into the actual cathedral and there was a real mass going on which was cool to see (and a good time for me to warm myself because I was numb to the bone from the cold and rain!). All around there are mini chapels too in the name of different saints.
Before we went into notre dame we got crepes at adams fave place, and they were AMAZING!! we both got ones with nutella--the most underrated condiment.
By the time we left notre dame it had turned really nice, even sunny and we walked over to the jewish quarter and did some shopping, very cute small boutiques as well as H&M etc.
We met up with our friend Nicole who is studying in paris at a falafal place which was amazing! I dont know if ive even had falafal before but i loved it! and the area was so cute, with little jewish bakeries and delis, I wanted to eat at every one!
Tomorrow we plan on going to the museo de orsay to see the impressionists works and then to the latin quarter or to the department store area,,,gotta get in a little shopping in paris right??
au revour!
