Hello! Sorry for the lag in updating, dont really have an excuse just never got around to it :)
This past weekend (Ap 15-17th) we went to Slovenia. We took a train from Zagreb to Bled which was about 3 hours. Closer to Zagreb is the Slovenian city of Ljubjiana, but we chose to forgo seeing this city as our guidebook made it seem similar to zagreb and we wanted to see more of the natural beauty (and less of the city life) of Slovenia--so off to Bled we went!
Bled is a little village/town situated around a small lake named--yep you guessed it--Lake Bled. It is very serene and cute with lots of little cafes and sweet shops surrounding it. The first day we took a day trip to the town of Bohinj, about an hour by bus to do some hiking around the lake there (called Lake Bohinj). We went to a tourist office and they showed us on a map how to hike up the mountain to get to a waterfall but after much steep uphill climbing said waterfall couldnt even be heard in the distance and given we couldnt really find the continuation of the trail we were on we chose to turn around and just admire how high we managed to climb and in such precarious of circumstance (see pics i posted on facebook for some action shots of us attempting to get through some of the more difficult parts of the hike).
On Sunday we walked around Lake Bled (about 3.5 miles) and rented a little wooden row boat to row to the island in the center of the lake. Atop this island is a church with 99 steps where, in the summer months, every Saturday grooms-to-be will attempt to carry their bride-to-be up the steps to the base of the church as a way of showing they are worthy of marriage. According to Rick Steve' 4 out of 5 grooms-to-be are successful!
We also went to Vintgar gorge on Sunday, which was about a 15 minute bus ride and a 50 minute walk from Bled. It was actually closed for the season which actually worked to our advantage because the ticket booths were closed but you cant really close a gorge to the public so we, as well as many other tourists, wandered the gorge for free! On the way back we took a hike to another town that had a scenic view of Bled and then walked down to the town to head back to Zagreb.
All in all, Slovenia was a very pretty country with very nice and friendly inhabitants. Of note for umich-ers reading this--Dr. Grum is from Slovenia!! This, of course, made the country that much more interesting!!
