Rainbow Beach is named because of it's multi-coloured sands. Also it is a five minute ferry journey across to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world.
6am Friday the 11th April I emerged from my dorm, still feeling ill from my Whitsundays trip, to meet the other ten people joining me in my 4x4 adventure around Fraser Island. First things first, everything we wanted to take was to be packed on top of the vehicle (which was named Trev) and covered with tarpauline for obvious reasons. The weather forcast was looking brilliant for the next few days which was a good start. My group were interesting! Some from Canada, Sweden, Japan, Germany, Ireland and England and everyone got on fine. Once sleeping bags, tents, spare clothes, food and most importantly, goon were packed up on top the adventure was well under way.
Mitchell and Derek from Canada were the only ones with off road driving experience and took control. I couldn't drive it because you need to be over 21. Not sure I would have done anyway - too much pressure with ten others watching you!! Once on the Island we had an itinerary mapped out for us by the car rental company, which ensured our trip would run smoothely and not get stranded anywhere because of tides etc.
The island was spectacular. We visited a number of lakes, the first one having bright red water, the others had perfectly clear water and the last we visited was green! My group were just up for chilling out around the lakes but I was feeling energetic. Luckily I met my match, Derek, and all weekend we were challenging eachother to stupid ativities and keeping eachother on our toes. All roadways were sand and it was great fun bouncing around in the 4x4, Bob Marley blaring out of the stereo. At night we camped in tents and cooked dinner in the pitch black which was eventful. The second night Derek and I decided not to sleep in the tents but to lay on the beach where we were camped and watch the stars. It was so pretty, then in the morning I woke up early enough to watch the sunrise over the horizon and the bright white sand of Fraser Island.
