Hello, I'm currently in surrutani waiting for another bus to hopfully get to phi phi today, done 26 hours on my 34 hour journey so far, so thought I would right my blog quick for you all on Chiang Mai.
So we went to chiang mai for thai new year (songkran) as its meant to be the best place to go for it and so I could also see char for the week as this where she lives and was teaching.
To get to chiang mai myself dave and chris travelled luxury style ... We got a plane as when we went to book the train it was fully booked so we took an hour flight with air asia instead, when we got the airport we got a taxi to our hostel (littlebirds) which is where char lived for a while and where Katie vicki and becca stayed on their holiday here, it was the opposite side of chiang Mao to where myself and dave stayed last time.
When we pulled up to the hostel it was full off people all sitting outside I could tell it was a lively party hostel and songkran would be fun to spend there as it wasn't due to start for another few days and they already had paddling pools out the front. I hadn't been there for long when char came to see me as she has her moped its easy for her to get around the city, it was so good to see her after 7 months, she is friends with the owners of the hostel as she stayed there for a while so when she arrived they picked her up and threw her straight into the paddling pool.
I saw her for a bit and then she went off and met her again for dinner with her American room mates she took us a to a lil food market where we ordered food to share, we all got a portion of rice to whole cut up chickens with garlic parpire Salad, spicy beef strips and spicy pork it was so delicious we then went back o chars house with everyone for a beer and then went out to a jaz bar and had a beer and listened to the music, we didn't go to bed late though as we had to get up in the morning for woodys elephant farm.
We got picked up at 8.30 and had the most amazing day being elephant keepers for the day we started off by being thought all the elephant commands in thai to be able to direct the elephants, we then got bunches on bananas and went and fed the adult and baby elephants and some pictures taken with them. From there we went for an elephant ride where you ride them bareback I was on the elephants neck at the start and dave was on its back, which I didn't like I don't feel safe on the neck so when we stopped dave swapped with me. After that we went into the river and bathed the elephants which was so amazing to do and scrubbed them and luckily due the fact I had an underwater camera I could get pictures of it and we got on the elephants back in the river. We then had lunch where they cooked us thai I let's with glass noodles, a potatoe curry dish and sweet and sour vegetables with rice which was delicious.
After lunch we got a mini bus to get and cut some candy canes which I tried for the first time it's like sucking out sugar water, we then took hem back to feed to the elephants as its a treat for them, we then bathed them again and then we to another river on their backs to go elephant swimming, basically the elephants swim in and out of the water with us on them. We then had a picture with two elephants lifted us up by the trunks like sitting on a swing ( the elephant camp has all these pictures still they will upload them n he next few days because they've been closed for thai new year so when they do I will put them on Facebook for you all to see)
The next few days in chiang mai were crazy we had 6 days of songkran water festival where we all bought water guns roamed the streets and sat outsides bars soaking each other all the locals and foreigners came together and had a good time drinking beer and sangsom (there local rum) and there was stages in different parts on he city where they had thai bands or speakers blasting out dance music and everyone dancing in the streets and the roads were like rivers. The worst bit though was the ice buckets people had squirting and throwing freezing cold water at you! And one local bar man gave us free blueberry jelly shots they were good!
One night chris was hungover and didn't want to go out so myself and DVD went and had a Look down the Sunday market which was way to busy nod crowed and then we went to dinner in a resteraunt which was so busy we had to wait for a table, it had swings had chairs on the outside tables and he food was delicious, not sure if any of you have ever tried this dish it's called Tom kao Kai it's a chicken curry with mushrooms and is coconut milk based its so delicious you need to look it up nan and make it for everyone!
Basically my time in chiang mai was one big day/night drinking session and I have on do recover from it on my travels to phi phi before it all starts agin on the beautiful party island for 4 nights, after there were going to koh lanta for a few nights to detox and relax can't wait it's well needed. I will write my next blog soon to update you on phi phi. I love and miss you all xxxxx
