Rachel's Travels...
Decided to go on a walk called the coast to coast walkway with Debbie. It's basically a walk across the city. We went via Parnell to have a look a the hostel I would be moving to - called Garden City Lodge, which seemed really nice. But we then had huge problems trying to get a bus to the start of the walk, and as we discovered after we had walked to the train station - the train didn't run on a sunday.
We ended up walking all the way to One Tree Hill, which was miles!
We finally got there and it was well worth the walk. It was stunning scenery. It's an extinct volcano (like Mount Eden) but it a lot bigger. It was the largest of Maori pa (settlement), and used to have a sacred totara tree that was there until 1876 when it was replaced by a pine tree (by European settlers - probably Englis!). There is also an obelisk there which records a treaty between the Maori and the British.
Anyway the tree was chopped down after it was attacked by a Maori protesting the felling of the original tree. So One Tree Hill is actually No Tree Hill.
On the way up to the summit I passed some trees with big roots sticking out of the ground. It reminded me of Lord of the Rings - so I had to have my photo taken with it.
On the way down from the summit we passed through Cornwall Park which again was lovely, and then as we were so knackered and cold (its bloody freezing here!) we got a bus back to the hostel.
