Today we drove the hour journey to Simon's Town which is a coastal town to the east side of the cape. The views on the way were amazing and the sea was just pure blue (which is good as Im diving there tomorrow.) Our first stop was to an attraction called Scratch Patch where you go into a cave type thing and the floor is covered in gemstones which you can take home. Nicola and I were easily the eldest there (by about 10 years) but still, we had fun, and they will never see us again so its ok. We all had a cup costing R40 which we filled with loads of different polished stones which probably added up to about a tenner if we'd brought them at home.
After our childish escapades at the scratch patch we headed for the central part of Simon's Town where we decided to go to the penguin colony... but not before being drawn in to some traditional african market stalls. We spent a lot of time pondering but in the end I bought a wooden bowl which has a 3D zebra drinking from it and mum bought an ostrich egg which has been painted with animals and a map of africa. This was followed by a trip to another shop (I can just see dad sighing in exasperation) where nicola bought a model penguin and we bought some postcards plus a gift for dad.
After the retail therapy was finished we headed for the penguins. There was loads of them on the beach and hiding under olive trees which lead us to getting some really good photos. They had such character and we got a really good photo of one looking perplexed at the camera as well as a photo of a 'loner penguin' who had lost all of his friends.
On the drive home we drove through Cape Town where we saw Table Mountain (which Nicola repeatedly tried to take photos of and on most occasions, got a white car or the speed limit signs instead.) We also saw some more coastal views and the Cape Town Bowl which is a view over the city.
