We are still in Cairns everyone. Me and Tom are now qualified open water divers and also have the adventure diver qualification. That means we can go diving without instructors to a depth of up to 40m. More on that later, but now gotta go back to Airlie beach where my last journal ended.
So... we are in Airlie beach and we are off to the whitsunday islands for a sailing adventure. Three days and two nights on the Ragamuffin II, with 12 other people on 2 crew. We stocked ourselves up with booze and off we headed. Unfortunately it was not as i remember from last time. The water wasnt still and the sun wasnt shining. We are in the tropics and its the wet season, thats for sure. And we went UP and DOWN and UP and DOWN. One girl spend the first day at the edge of the boat. Oh dear. There wasnt as much drinking going on as i thought there would be on this boat. I think everyone thought about the combination of the room spinning and the side to side swaying. The cabin that i stayed in was nicknamed by myself as the "pit of death". Situated in the kitchen, so the hottest room of all. Third bunk upwards, the ceiling was almost touching my nose. Pretty much like being in a coffin/sauna. I couldnt take it so i either slept on the floor or outside in the rain. Both were better options. Anyway, its all part of the sailing experience. Well, thats what i kept telling myslef. Apart from the sleeping experiences, the whitsundays did throw up some treats. I got to swim with my first turtle and a sting ray, which was about a metre wide. Absolutely fantastic. We visited the stunning whitehaven beach and ran around in our stinger suits for a couple of hours in the ocean. Around these areas there are lots of deadly jellyfish (Box and Irugangi), so you have to wear these daft looking suits that only give you 75% protection. All in all was another great sailing trip. Back on land, the sailing crew all meet at beaches pub for a night out on the booze, also meeting up with Ella and Hannah from our Fraser island experience, who had been on a different boat.
Two days later we leave Airlie beach. Me and Lee leave with hangovers as Tom stayed in the previous night. Probably the better idea, lol. An emergency macdonalds takes place before we set off for the Magnetic islands, two hours drive north. Leaving Genie (car) behind we take the boat across to the islands. There would be no rest here as the following day is Australia. Just one of the many bank holidays these Aussies have so they can get pissed and have a BBQ. They even have a bank holiday for the queens birthday. Unbelievable. The place we stayed was really cool though. We stayed in these crazy huts at the YHA hostel. The place was full of wild life. You see wallabies and possoms and all sorts, even when your eating your dinner. The noise from the birds and wildlife in the morning was incredible, you didnt need an alarm clock. The next day we woke up refreshed after a night off the booze. Today we would be spending the day playing games and drinking. A 200 dollar prize was at stake. The first game was tossing the thong (flip flop). Leeroy got to the final, where the organiser decided to settle it with an arm wrestle. Unfortunately Lee lost against a great dane. More bad luck on the obstacle course. Tom was in the lead and about to win. However, he forgot that he had to run round the big tree at the end and the great Dane came through to win again. I did well on the biscuit eating competition. We had to eat a biscuit so it formed Australia. I got a creativity prize (fishing line and hook) for making the letters OZ, while everyone else made the shape of the country. It all came down to the coconut bowling and the great Dane went home with the 200 dollars. The whole thing was pretty much a complete shambles but great fun all the same.
The next day we left Magnetic island for a quick rest stop in Mission Beach before reaching Cairns. We spend the whole day here watching television. Watched the womens tennis final. S. Williams kicked ass. Also watched The butterfly effect, old He-Man cartoons (LOL, still great), Lethal weapon 4 and finished off with the Taxi driver. Ahh, what a great day. Really needed it. Didnt wanna move. Just wanted to watch TV and eat pizza and thats what i did here.
