Thursday - Fine
Due to a bet that I lost with Kim it was my shout for lunch today. I also had to do the house work before we left.
It was very warm out today, and Kim demanded a seafood lunch. Luckily we didn't have to walk very far along the bay before we came across a restaurant serving a meal that would suffice.
We grabbed a table by the water and Kim ordered swordfish, but for me I had the pork medallion. The meals were fantastic and we washed them down with a tasty crisp dry white.
During lunch we made plans on how to spend our afternoon, we thought about catching a couple buses to Malta's old capital Mdina.
We didn't think that we would be back in time before the shops closed. So before heading back to the hotel we picked up some food for dinner, as well as some more wine. We found the same bottle that we drank at lunch and thought that we would give it another go.
It took two buses to get to Mdina, but we only had to pay for one cheap ticket each. We bought all day tickets for €2.60, I also saw signs advertising 7 day passes for €12 not too shabby at all.
Mdina is a central medieval walled town, also with a wide moat situated on at one of the highest hills in Malta. Settlements in Mdina go back to over 4000 BC, but was first fortified around 700 BC.
Currently the town has a population of just over 300, and only a limited amount of car access is given to the residences and weddings, one was going on while we were there.
For that reason the city has the nickname of the silent city, and believe me it was quiet. We saw more horses towing people in carriages than cars.
It was very nice walking through the quiet city, it's very very clean and the buildings look brand new! There were plenty of pretty little streets to admire, and from the bastions there's a good view back out to sea. We also saw a few palaces, squares and the grand St. Paul's Cathedral, but we couldn't go in because of the wedding. The cathedral was rebuilt in the late 17th century, after a strong earthquake a few years before, which destroyed a large number of buildings in Mdina and Malta.
Kim said a funny thing whilst walking around the small city. We have been watching the TV show Game of Thrones, and Kim said she can imagine the king walking through these streets, because it looked a lot like Kings landing (the capital city in the show). Well it turns out that in the first season Mdina was the location for King's Landing! Haha.
It was a nice way to spend the arvo, I only wish that the bus back was as easy as the bus here. We had to hop off the first bus, because the driver said it was to full, not only that, it arrived 20mins late.
We were in no rush though, so we took the delay fairly lightly, and thought that we would walk down the road through the neighboring town of Rabat, and try and hop on at a stop that was less busy.
We didn't get much luck finding the other bus stops, but we had another nice stroll watching the towns lights turn on as the days light faded.
Once we decided that we weren't going to find other stops, we headed back to our original place of boarding only to find that there was a bus there waiting. Sweet!
We had to wait zero mins at St. Paul's for change of buses, and we were home in no time eating dinner and drinking yummy Maltese wine.
