Arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) after a 200km bus journey from Mui Ne.
After checking into our hotel, Jo and I spent the remainder of the afternoon wandering round the city and orienteering ourselves. Admittedly, I like Ha Noi more, as Saigon feels more like another big city - albeit with thousands of scooters clogging up the streets. Apparently there are 10 million people in the city and 5 million scooters - quite a statistic.
The next day was spent visiting the War Museum and Reunification Palace. Being somewhat of a history buff, I enjoyed both sites. The museum in particular is a must see, as it has an extensive collection of photographs taken by various international photo journalists during the American/Vietnam war, as well as an entire section devoted to the evils of the dioxins used by the Americans during the war i.e. agents pink, green, purple, blue, white and orange. The photos of the resulting forest defoliation and deformed people are shocking, to say the least.
Jo and I also had drinks in the bar lounge at the top of the Sheraton Hotel - a nice way to unwind after tramping around in the heat and hustle and bustle of the city for a day. The views of the city from the 23rd floor were superb.
The following morning we caught a bus to the Mekong Delta. We would've taken a tour of the Cu Chi tunnels if we'd had the time, but had to console ourselves with the fact that we'd already seen the Vinh Moc tunnels near Hue.
