Definitely one of the highlights of my travels in Vietnam. Jo and I were part of a tour group that took in the floating markets, fishing villages, fish farms and boat trips over a 3 day/2 night period - very interesting and informative.
There were a couple of young Aussies and Swedes with us and they certainly added to the experience as well. There's nothing like the sight of an Aussie lying on the floor of a boat at 10 in the morning whilst nursing a hangover - ahhhh, to be young again…….
The two towns that we stayed in were Can Tho and Chau Doc. Can Tho has a nice river front promenade with a couple of good hotels and restaurants. Chau Doc on the other hand, is a run-down, one horse town - or maybe it's just the area where our hotel was located. Either way, there's not much that I can say about the place. Our Aussie friends seemed to find somewhere to hang out though and only got back to the hotel at about 1h30 in the morning after a rice wine session. Needless to say - they took a while to get going the next morning.
Something else worth mentioning is the fact that at one of our numerous bus stops, Jo and I saw what we think was a victim of agent orange (there are still many children born in Vietnam to this day who suffer from the effects of the dioxin). It really brought home the plight of these people and yet many of them do not get any form of assistance from the government - financial or other - whatsoever.
