Onnét bekocsikáztunk a Zemplén szivébe, Vágáshuta irányába.
The Castle of Füzér and it's surroundings
It was a smooth ride to Gonc in the car but it wasn't smooth enough for Viki's stomach. She got sick a few minutes before arriving to Laci's parents' place. Hervocabulary has improved dramatically during the drive because she was repeating everything the GPS said. (At the next opportunity turn right....)
She was feeling much better the next morning; still, we decided to leave her with Laci's mum while we toured through the surrounding area. It is amazing how close everything is - when you have a car to travel with. We visited a medieval castle on a hilltop that had a fantastic view and a great history. I just love these castles! I always try to imagine what life must have been in these places so many years ago and especially during battles.
Just a few kms from the castle stands a Mansion in the next village that was built in the 17th-18th centuries, mirroring late-Renaissance traditions. (On the first floor alone it had 68 rooms) The park around the mansion is a marvelous arboretum. The story of the mansion is pretty sad as it has been abandoned by its occupants during the war when it was turned into a luxurious hotel with a golf course etc. Then the state used it as a hospital first for children with lung diseases, then for adults. During that time it was trashed and used but not looked after. A few years ago it has been listed as a World Heritage Building and now they are trying to renovate it very with limited financial resources.
On the way back we visited some remote but magnificent places in the heart of the mountains. ...natural fountains and natural wonders (like the icy cave) that have historical significance as well. Was good to get back to base and spend some time with Viki and Laci'sparents.
