Yesterday I ticked the number 1 slot off my bucket list...swimming with Great Whites!
We headed out with a company called White Shark Africa to seal island where approx 3000 cape fur seals live and the waters surrounding it have the highest population of white sharks anywhere in the world. Within 5 minutes of the boat stopping a 3m shark was checking us out but then slowly disappeared into the murky water. As we were putting our wetsuits on another appeared which was much bigger (just over 4m) and we all climbed down into the cage.
The visibility wasn't great underwater but you could see the sharks chasing the bait which was being thrown to them and once or twice they smashed into the cage. Sarah got a bit to close to a shark at one point which makes for a great video which I will put on YouTube when we are back in Dubai.
Mossel Bay is the place you see on all the nature documentaries when you see the sharks breaching the water. Twice the sharks breached almost half their bodies out of the water (again this looks amazing on video from water level) and once the whole shark left the water!
The viewing on the boat was just as amazing and overall we saw 7 different sharks. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day and we were absolutely gutted when the captain said we needed to start heading back. We will defiantly be doing it again at some point in the future.
Today we have a relaxed morning maybe going for a hike. We are then getting picked up at 15.30 to start the 400km journey to Cape Town where we hope to arrive around 22.00 tonight.
We then have 4 full days in Cape Town before leaving on the 5th September!
