On monday we made the trip from Singapore to kota Kinabalu, borneo via a stop in KL. We checked into PODs backpacker and then set out to explore the town. We had dinner in the local night market and bought a 1kg of red snapper which they BBQ'd in front of us. It was absolutely delicious!
Yesterday we planned out the rest of our week in borneo and then decided to take a trip out to one of the local islands. A local guy drove us out to manukan island on his dodgy boat and dropped us on the beach and told us he would be back at 5pm and then disappeared. After relaxing on the beach, snorkelling and a walk over the island through the jungle, sure enough he appeared again at 5pm. We weren't alone on the island however as we shared it with a few Chinese who were as inappropriately dressed for the beach as you could possibly imagine and 2 very large water monitors who every so often decided they were too close to one another and had a fight, crashing around in the undergrowth and making a lot of noise.
Today we went diving in the marine park and although the visibility wasn't great we did see a lot of stuff. The highlight for Sarah being 2 massive turtles and for me being a very inquisitive giant reef octopus! The day was great with some really nice people and we decided to treat ourselves to a cold beer on the waterfront afterwards as it was my 50th dive and Sarah's 10th, both nice milestones in our diving careers!
Tomorrow we are off to Sepilok on the other side of the island, a 5 hour bus ride away. We are staying at a lodge right near the orangutan rehab centre which I visited 18 months ago! We are both so excited to watch them for the next few days!
